Apu is a dad...again.
Well, not really.  He’s actually becoming a first-time father: Hank Azaria and his girlfriend Katie Wright are expecting their first child…a boy… Hank and Katie - a former actress who is now studying to be a family therapist - have been dating for two years. The happy couple are currently house hunting to find the perfect family home. Hank is best known as the voice of...

My Holiday with McCain
Via the SM Tip Line, a desi Clinical Psychologist has some not so nice things to say about John McCain. It was just before John McCain’s last run at the presidential nomination in 2000 that my husband and I vacationed in Turtle Island in Fiji with John McCain, Cindy, and their children, including Bridget (their adopted Bangladeshi child). It was not our intention, but it was our misfortune to be...

Crew on an Air India passenger jet discovered a snake coiled up under a seat and were unable to catch it as it slithered around the plane, the airline said on Thursday. It evaded capture by slipping into an air vent and could not be found even when staff unscrewed panels inside the fuselage, opened all the doors and fumigated the plane. [Link]

Doesn’t she kind of look like Aishwariya Rai?  Bizarro Rai maybe? ST.PAUL, MI - Sunita Krishna made history at the Republican National Convention on Sept.1 becoming the first Indian-American to deliver the Pledge of Allegiance. She is an Alternate Delegate from John McCain’s home state, Arizona. Sunita who has been blogging for a Tuscon newspaper wrote about her experience: “Today was...

The party that glows in the dark
According to Peniel Joseph on PBS, the delegates to this convention are 93% White, 5% Hispanic, and 2% Black. Unlike in 2000, the GOP has ceded the attempt to woo minority voters. Really surprised not to see more Latino delegates.

Vogue India’s August issue presented a 16-page vision of supple handbags, bejeweled clutches and status-symbol umbrellas, modeled not by runway stars or the wealthiest fraction of Indian society who can actually afford these accessories, but by average Indian people. Perhaps not surprisingly, not everyone in India was amused. The editorial spread was “not just tacky but downright...

No sh*t? really?
It isn’t until the final weeks, when her parents visit, that she tries the arranged marriage route. By then, it’s apparent that while you can take the girl out of America, you can’t take American ideals out of the girl: she still craves a romantic spark. Of course, there’s nothing new in the story of a woman seeking a husband. What’s new here — and stunningly so — is Jain’s engaging, intelligent...

Terror Watchlist "Crippled By Technical Flaws"
Via ars technica: The database used to produce the government’s terror watch lists is “crippled by technical flaws,” according to the chairman of a House technology oversight subcommittee—and the system designed to replace it may be even worse. In a letter to the inspector general at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence last week, Rep. Brad Miller (D-NC)...

Doing his part
Right before the AAPI Caucus meeting began, I had a few minutes to meet Siddarth Mohandas, a Research Fellow with the Brookings Institute who currently works with the giant Obama foreign policy team as well as with the Obama campaign on South Asian community outreach. He works with the giant foreign policy team on South Asian issues, and on political outreach issues, he mentioned that he helps...

Only a handful of India’s political provide details of donations they receive to the Election Commission. Of the 920 registered parties, only 21 have so far submitted such information… According to a 2003 amendment to the election rules, all parties should provide their financial information. But, as the rule is not enforceable, parties ignore it and the commission is unable to...

Bringing the cash through the door
Check out how much money Obama raked in at the event where he proclaimed “I am desi.” Senator Barack Obama, the Democratic party’s Presidential hopeful, on Aug.17 spoke candidly to a small crowd of South Asian supporters at a fundraiser held at the Fairmont Hotel’s Crystal Room, here. “It’s going to be difficult,” said Obama. “Change is always tough. And electing me is change. It...

Both Angry Asian Man and Asian American Action Fund will be in Denver blogging as well. Also from Angry Asian Man is this interesting statistic: Back in 2002, the Asian American Journalists Association released a study documenting the underrepresentation Asian American men in television news. Women greatly outnumbered men in newsrooms and journalism school classrooms. Blame the Connie Chung...

“If your child comes home and says, ‘I want to play basketball,’ what’s your response?” he added. “No way! You have to stay in school and become a doctor! I don’t want anything that will derail you from that goal.” In recent days, they said, one of the best shooters on the boys’ team said he wouldn’t be able to continue playing regularly because his parents — concerned that some of his grades...

Diplomatic sources in Washington described President Bush as Mr Musharraf’s “last holdout” in the US capital. Others in the Bush administration — including Vice-President Dick Cheney and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice — had long given up on Mr Musharraf. But Mr Bush remained faithful to the person he considered a close ally and a personal friend. The person who played a key role in...
