Cheee! All these disrespectful little monkeys should get a tight slap for stepping on books!
/IndianAuntie, out.

Doesn’t she kind of look like Aishwariya Rai? Bizarro Rai maybe?
ST.PAUL, MI - Sunita Krishna made history at the Republican National Convention on Sept.1 becoming the first Indian-American to deliver the Pledge of Allegiance. She is an Alternate Delegate from John McCain’s home state, Arizona.
Sunita who has been blogging for a Tuscon newspaper wrote about her experience: “Today was the big day: my debut on national television opening the convention with the Pledge of Allegiance.

The party that glows in the dark
According to Peniel Joseph on PBS, the delegates to this convention are 93% White, 5% Hispanic, and 2% Black. Unlike in 2000, the GOP has ceded the attempt to woo minority voters. Really surprised not to see more Latino delegates.

Vogue India’s August issue presented a 16-page vision of supple handbags, bejeweled clutches and status-symbol umbrellas, modeled not by runway stars or the wealthiest fraction of Indian society who can actually afford these accessories, but by average Indian people.
Perhaps not surprisingly, not everyone in India was amused.
The editorial spread was “not just tacky but downright distasteful” said Kanika Gahlaut, a columnist for the daily newspaper Mail Today that is based here, who denounced it as an “example of vulgarity.”
There’s nothing “fun or funny” about putting a poor person in a mud hut in clothing designed by Alexander McQueen, she said in a telephone interview. “There are farmer suicides here, for God’s sake” she said, referring to thousands of Indian farmers who have killed themselves in the last decade because of debt.

No sh*t? really?
It isn’t until the final weeks, when her parents visit, that she tries the arranged marriage route. By then, it’s apparent that while you can take the girl out of America, you can’t take American ideals out of the girl: she still craves a romantic spark. Of course, there’s nothing new in the story of a woman seeking a husband. What’s new here — and stunningly so — is Jain’s engaging, intelligent voice, at turns wry … and provocatively curious (why do her smart, married Indian cousins, who aren’t allowed to defecate during the day in their own homes, seem more at peace with their lives than she is?). Actor Daniel Dae Kim, “Jin” from one of my favorite shows “Lost” showed up at the Asian American Finance Committee meeting to say a few words congratulating the mostly South Asian American audience for their great fundraising efforts. He was accompanied by hottie Kelly Hu.

Organizing! Organizing! Organizing! Asian Americans are putting their work ethic and ambition to good use in the Obama campaign - I recently told you about Sid Salvi and his toolkit - well some of the real important work that is being done at thie convention is being done in the AAPI grassroots strategy sessions - plans have been made to target ethnic groups and media in every battleground state - everything from house parties to native language campaigning. On the floor I met Shekar Jayaraman, an Ohio Delegate who was a Hillary Clinton supporter but is now “100% behind Barack Obama.” He is going to work in the Secretary of State’s office this fall and is excited about registering new voters, including and especially AAPI voters.
